Best "Type" of 90%/dimes, Walkin Libs or Halves
What is the Best "Type" of 90% to get-regular dimes & quarters, Mercury dimes, Walkin Libs or Halves?? The Mercs, WL's & Halves seem to carry a small premium. Are they worth it over plain jane dimes & quarters??
I REALLY like the Walking Libs, kinda like smaller "Old School" SAE's!!! Thanks, Bill. |
Re: Best "Type" of 90%/dimes, Walkin Libs or Halves
The classic answer to this to buy the 90% with the least amount of wear, typically, this means 1964 Kennedy halves, newish Roosie dimes & Washington quarters. However, I typically go with Franks, Walkers, or Mercs, taking into consideration that a buyer would have to go through each coin in a roll of the newer coinage (to make sure you're not sneaking in >1964 coins). Am I taking a hit on the wear weight? Yes, but to me, putting myself in the place of a potential buyer, the instant recognizabilty of the older coinage is a premium in itself.
My $0.02 (95% Cu). |

really quite a loss in those beautiful walking liberties. compare a roll of walking liberties and a roll of pure '64 kennedies. the roll of walking libs will seem a minimum of at least one short.

franklins are a good pick.....easily seen as silver....generally not as much wear as a walker or even dimes and quarters

Re: Best "Type" of 90%/dimes, Walkin Libs or Halves
lots of things depends on your motive....if you're into collecting versus into making a profit versus some of both...
for instance would you rather have 100 silver eagles or 106 generic silver rounds? both would roughly cost you the same price today but which would you rather own? i'm sure if you made a poll you'd have split decisions....some say buy the most silver for the buck and some say buy the best silver that has a nice premium on the buy and on the sell. personally i think from those choices i'd rather have the silver eagles. and from all the 90% coinage i prefer kennedy half dollars since they are in the best condition and they are easier to count. |

Funny you should mention "Walking Liberty's", I got a roll of them in the square tube for $100 today at the fleamarket. I, also picked up a 10 ounce bar at $160 plus some run down silver dollars at $12/each.:bull-buddy-icon:A darn good day.:bull-buddy-icon:

Hadn't you better decide if you're buying for bullion content or for numismatic purposes? If the former, the cheaper the better, pretty much without regard to condition. Check www.coinflation.com

But I'd rather have Franklin's than Kennedy's...Cause as long as they aren't real worn (rarely are) then who cares bout the condition? Or Date for that matter.. If you want em shiny...you could just clean em up...its just bullion to me. |
Re: Best "Type" of 90%/dimes, Walkin Libs or Halves
Keep looking around, sometimes one can find the older coins in great shape and with zero premium over the later coins. What has worked well for me is that I occasionally get to cherry pick through groups of mercs, walkers and franklins from two different sources with zero premium over the later coins. I've become very friendly with one very private dealer who doesn't advertize, and he actually sells me silver at the kitco buy price when he wants to unload some odd lots.
The other day I picked out dozens of mercs that were in excellent condition, even a few Au's. I weighed them later and they were close to even with roosevelt dimes. So I have the advantage of them being instantly recognizable as a silver coin without looking at the edge, and if I sell them by weight down the road, they are close to .072 troy oz each. I've picked up many franklins the same way, close to AU coins. The walkers are tougher to find close to AU, but I've gotten a few. And don't forget about silver dollars, one day I bought 10 for spot, including several AU peace dollars and a morgan, zero premium but I will get a large premium on resale. All of these also have the visual appeal of the classic designs, from a period when America was in a very different space. |
Re: Best "Type" of 90%/dimes, Walkin Libs or Halves
My preference is for coins that have the classic look. I much prefer Winged Liberty (Mercury) dimes to Roosevelt dimes and Walking Liberty halves to Kennedy halves. I also like the Franklin Halves. The bonus of using the older coins as a barter currency is that there is instant recognition that these are silver coins. Not many people today even know that Kennedy halves were 90% silver in 1964 and 40% silver until 1970. But they recognize (by not recognizing them as circulating coins) the older designs. For these reasons, I avoid Washington quarters.
Of course, I never turn down Roosevelt dimes or Washington quarters I get in change. |
